Question Mondays: If you're a guy, why do you wear make-up?
I have to admit that I get asked this question quite a lot since instead of wearing "natural-type" unnoticeable makeup that other guys who wear makeup wear (whew, -catches breath-), I tend to wear bolder stuff, which is to say, sometimes, somewhat noticeable. For example, I wear mascara, blushes, bronzers, highlighters, eyeshadow (mostly browns to do that cut-crease effect).
Like I said before, other than being a skin-care junkie, I also love make-up. I don't know why and people who normally ask why I wear makeup if I'm a guy usually get one of these three answers, depending on my mood:
1. Umm, cause I like it? (imagine mean girls way, but sometimes also in a jokingly-manner, depends if it's one of those days, really)
2. Oh cause I want to hide imperfections *insert fake laugh*.
3. None of your business *rolls eyes*.
Now, those keyboard warriors out there, don't go flaming on me. The third option is only limited to people that always piss me off. Yes, piss me off. When I say that, I mean those who just plainly just criticise without knowing anything about me, whereas the first and second answer are the most common.
Furthermore, let me be honest with y'all. I hate stereotypes. I hate that people are sorted into groups by society and it telling us what we must do or who we must become, it's like our paths are determines by it. NO, I feel that everyone is like a snowflake (ermaygad whai), unique, and it is YOU who can determine who you are, and not those around you.
I know that I am in no position to say this but trust me. I say, just be who you are. Whether you're a girl who likes guy stuff or the other way around, just do it (terribly cheesy here).
Whew, I feel like I'm pouring out my life story here, so let me just get to the point.
In today's globalising age, and where looks have a mounting importance in the social sphere, one have to keep up with appearances.
"NPD Group, a market information company, revealed that men in America spent $1 billion in grooming products in 2002, skincare alone covering $47 million of that. This is a 9% increase since 2000." - NPD G.
There is also multiple top brands that are releasing or have already released lines targeted for men. And mind, men going for 'facials', which is considered a 'girly' activity, are the norms these days. Especially, Korean K-pop stars. Need I say more?
In conclusion, I wear make-up because it is partly like a therapy session. The process of it is just calming to me. Additionally, I am also concerned with my looks and how I present myself to other people (in terms of appearances). Some argue that it may be that I have self-esteem issues but who knows? I can't deny that I don't have any, but who doesn't?
I feel that make-up is something empowering. Some people I have talked to said that if they felt like crap, wearing a lipstick can make them feel better and empower them to continue doing their everyday stuff. Not merely lipstick, but anything else that has to do with cosmetics, which includes skincare (which I am a hoarder of, ..totally another post).
So that's it for this post (*hyperventilates*). Hope this isn't too "wall-of-text". Just want to put forward my thoughts. My question is, do any of you wear bold makeup (whether you are male or female)? If you do, do you care what others think? If so, in what circumstances?
